Condors Varsity Recap January 20th - 26th

Conestoga Condors Weekly Recap: January 20th-26th, 2025 

Welcome back to this week’s recap! From basketball to volleyball, let’s do a breakdown of what the Condors were up to this week: 

Condors Volleyball

Women’s Volleyball

January 22nd: The women’s volleyball team went against the Niagara Knights in a road match ending in a 0-3 loss. The Condors notable performances included Serena Grant leading the team with 4 kills and an impressive .571 attack percentage, contributing 6 points, while Madison Welmers added 4 kills and 6 points. 

January 24th: The Conestoga Condors women’s volleyball team went on to dominate Sheridan in a 3-0 sweep (25-10, 25-21, 25-22) in a home match on Friday night, improving to 6-11 on the season. Bianca Marchetti was the standout performer, registering 15 kills with a .382 hitting percentage and 20 points. Abby Sluys added 9 kills and 11 points, while setter Althea Rabano contributed 28 assists and 4 service aces, helping the team tally 12 aces. 

Men’s Volleyball

January 22nd: The men’s volleyball team went up against the Niagara Knights in Welland, Ontario last week and brought home a 3-1 win.  They dominated the first set with a .375 attack percentage and a 25-11 win. The following two sets ended in  25-23 and 25-23, and some notable performances were from Tyrell Belgrove with 18 kills, a .571 attack percentage, and 20 points, supported by Walker Kalin’s 9 kills and 9 points.

January 24th: The men followed the lead of the women's team on Friday defeating Sheridan in straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-20). Walker Kalin led the charge with 15 kills and 16 points, while Evan Kritz contributed 8 kills, 11 points, and 2 service aces. Ben Mollink was efficient on offense, posting 5 kills on 7 attempts for a .714 hitting percentage, and also added 6 blocks and 2 aces. Setter Yannick Krauss orchestrated the offense with 30 assists and added 13 digs.

Women’s Basketball

January 22nd: The women’s basketball team played against the Humber Hawks in an away game, losing 71-55. The team started strong and secured 16 points in the first quarter. The team was led by Maddy Weber with an impressive 20 points, shooting 9-of-13 from the field. Jamilia Beckford came up 1 rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds. 

January 24th: The women’s basketball team fought hard but ultimately fell 64-54 to the Niagara Knights in Welland. Jamila Beckford led the Condors with 18 points and 8 rebounds, while Maddy Weber added a double-double with 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Andie Maylen also contributed 12 points, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. 

Men’s Basketball

January 22nd: The Men’s team went against the Humber Hawks ending in a 108-69 loss. Emanuel Liyaw had a standout performance, recording 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Tristan Braham and Jaures Brandon Kemayou also contributed solid efforts. Other key contributions came from Tristan Braham, who added 12 points, and Jaures Brandon Kemayou, who finished with 9 points.

January 24th: The team secured a thrilling 77-74 victory over the Niagara Knights in a nail-biter in Welland. After trailing by 11 points in the first quarter, the Condors fought back with grit to improve their record to 6-10. The Condors displayed excellent team play with 17 assists, led by Emanuel Liyaw, who also contributed 4 assists and 6 rebounds. Defensively, they out-rebounded Niagara 42-29, capitalizing on second-chance opportunities and protecting the rim with 5 blocks.
