Condors Varsity Weekly Recap: January 29 - February 4


Join us in an action-packed week of Conestoga Sports action as we head into our court sports' final weeks of the regular season. Here are the most recent highlights and results:

Quote Of the Week

"Conestoga College was proud to be the 2024 host for OCAA West Regional Badminton Championships this past weekend. The event went smoothly, and the tournament was packed with badminton talent and skill for the region. Our condor team represented itself with class throughout the weekend, with six badminton teams qualifying for the OCAA championship at Centennial College. We believe our team will challenge for the top of the province” - Matthew Schnarr


The Highlights

Women's Basketball – The Women's Basketball team hosted Mohawk on Friday. It was a competitive game, with Mohawk leading at half 37-30. Mohawk was able to pull ahead in the second half to win 76-46.

Men's Basketball – Facing Mohawk at home on Friday, the Men's Basketball team battled hard after a challenging first quarter, winning the second and third quarters. Despite their efforts, they ultimately fell short with a final score of 92-83.

Women's Volleyball – The Women's Volleyball team had a busy week with away games against Humber and Redeemer. Unfortunately, they faced defeats, losing 3-0 to Humber and 3-1 to Redeemer. The set scores unfolded as follows:

  • Conestoga 17 – Humber 25
  • Conestoga 15 – Humber 25
  • Conestoga 23 – Humber 25

 

  • Conestoga 20 – Redeemer 25
  • Conestoga 25 – Redeemer 21
  • Conestoga 20 – Redeemer 25
  • Conestoga 22 – Redeemer 25

The team finishes the regular season ranked 5th in the OCAA West with nine wins and nine losses, eagerly awaiting playoff announcements.

Men's Volleyball – Men's Volleyball had a jam-packed week with three games. On Thursday, they travelled to Humber, where in a back-and-forth game, they lost 3-0, set scores below:

  • Conestoga 20 – Humber 25
  • Conestoga 19 – Humber 25
  • Conestoga 21 – Humber 25

On Saturday, they bounced back and travelled to Redeemer, securing a 3-0 win. See the set scores below:

  • Conestoga 25 – Redeemer 19
  • Conestoga 25 – Redeemer 14
  • Conestoga 25 – Redeemer 21

On Sunday, the men played Sheridan at home in a game rescheduled due to weather. Your Condors won 3-0 set scores below:

  • Conestoga 25 – Sheridan 18
  • Conestoga 25 – Sheridan 20
  • Conestoga 25 – Sheridan 23

That concludes the Men's Volleyball team's regular season games. The Men finish ranked 1st in the OCAA West with 14 wins and four losses. Stay tuned for playoff announcements!

Badminton – Conestoga College proudly hosted OCAA West Regionals on February 2nd and 3rd. It was an exciting and successful tournament. The Women's badminton team placed first with a score of 34, and the Men's team placed second with a score of 22.

In the Women's singles category, Devika Santhosh Kumar placed first with a 4-0 record, and Mariam Muqeem placed second with a 3-1 record. Marla Betts and Sadik Ali placed first in the Mixed Doubles category with a 3-1 record.

In the Men's singles category, Raj Bhope placed second with a 4-2 record.

In the Women's Doubles category, On Ki Poon and Mandy Ni placed second with a 3-1 record, and in the Men's Doubles category, Maxwell Barnes and Justin Johnson placed 3rd with a 2-2 record.

Congratulations to the athletes mentioned as they have qualified for the OCAA Championships on February 15th-17th at Centennial College where they vie for provincial supremacy and qualification in the national championships


Players to Watch

Keep your eyes on these powerhouse athletes as we head into the final weeks of the regular season play and playoffs.  

Maia Natvik, Women's Basketball – Maia has emerged as a reliable player, contributing both offensively and defensively for the Women's Basketball team. In the recent game against Mohawk, she demonstrated her scoring ability by putting up 10 points, showcasing her ability to draw fouls and converting an impressive six out of nine free throws. Maia has maintained a solid 67.1% accuracy from the free-throw line throughout the season.

Kristian Varosi, Men's Basketball – Kristian made a significant impact as the leading scorer for the Condors in the game against Mohawk. Coming off the bench, he delivered an impressive performance, scoring 17 points and securing 11 rebounds.

Bianca Marchetti, Women's Volleyball – Bianca continues to be a solid offensive threat for the Women's Volleyball team. In recent matches, she scored 9 points against Humber and 13 points against Redeemer, showcasing her consistency. 

Jason Ashley, Men's Volleyball – Jason has proven to be a reliable scorer throughout the week. In the game against Humber, he contributed 7 points, followed by 5 points against Redeemer. However, he had a standout performance against Sheridan, scoring an impressive 14 points with 13 kills and an outstanding .526 kill percentage.
