Condors Varsity Weekly Recap - January 22nd -28th

 


Amidst the ongoing regular season for our court sports, where teams strive to climb the rankings, and with the commencement of the indoor soccer season, the past week has been an exciting week for Conestoga athletics.

The Highlights

Our teams travelled across Ontario this week; here are the highlights and results:

Women's Basketball – The Women's basketball team travelled to Redeemer on Wednesday. It was a competitive game, but the Royals pulled away in the fourth quarter. The final score was 78-58 in favour of Redeemer. On Saturday, they hit the road again to London, where they faced off against Fanshawe, resulting in an 81-36 loss.

Men's Basketball – The Men's Basketball team also played two away games this week. A tough match against Redeemer on Wednesday ended with a score of 121-71 in favour of Redeemer. On Saturday, they faced Fanshawe, concluding with a 104-70 score in favour of The Falcons.

Women's Volleyball – The Women's Volleyball team hosted Mohawk at home on Wednesday and secured a clean 3-0 win. The set scores unfolded as follows:

  • Conestoga 25 – Mohawk 22
  • Conestoga 25 – Mohawk 11
  • Conestoga 25 – Mohawk 14

On Saturday, the Women's Volleyball team travelled to St. Clair, where they battled and had some close sets but ultimately lost 0-3. Set scores below:

  • Conestoga 23 – St. Clair 25
  • Conestoga 19 – St. Clair 25
  • Conestoga 11 – St. Clair 25

The Women's Volleyball team is now ranked 4th in the OCAA West with nine wins and seven losses.

Men's Volleyball – Men's Volleyball displayed dominance as they hosted Mohawk at home on Wednesday, securing a clean 3-0 win. Set scores as follows:

  • Conestoga 25 – Mohawk 18
  • Conestoga 25 – Mohawk 17
  • Conestoga 25 – Mohawk 17

The momentum continued Saturday as they travelled to Windsor to face the top-ranked St. Clair Saints, securing a huge 3-2 win. See the set scores below:   

  • Conestoga 25 – St. Clair 21
  • Conestoga 23 – St. Clair 25
  • Conestoga 23 – St. Clair 25
  • Conestoga 25 – St. Clair 23
  • Conestoga 15 – St. Clair 11 

With a seven-game winning streak, the men's volleyball team now proudly holds the 1st rank in the OCAA West with 12 wins and three losses. 

Women's Indoor Soccer – On Friday, the Women's Indoor Soccer team showcased their skills at the Ontario Soccer Center during the George Brown Invitational. They finished first in their pool with notable game scores:

  • Conestoga 2 – Sheridan 0
  • Conestoga 0 – Fanshawe 0
  • Conestoga 6 – Laurier Branford 0

Advancing to the semi-finals, they faced Lakehead Orillia, resulting in a 1-1 tie, leading to a shootout. Keeper Maddy Sloan made two crucial saves, and Megan Voutour and Ashely Blazek scored their penalty shots, propelling the team to the finals. Despite a hard-fought effort, they lost 3-1 to St. Clair in the finals. The tournament was a good showing of what promises to be an exciting season.

Men's Indoor Soccer – The Men's Indoor Soccer team mirrored the success of their female counterparts at the George Brown Invitational. Topping their pool with scores as follows:

  • Conestoga 1 – Sheridan 0
  • Conestoga 0 – Fanshawe 0
  • Conestoga 3 – Laurier Branford 0

The Men proceeded to the semi-finals against St. Clair. In a thrilling back-and-forth game that ended in a 0-0 tie, the teams headed to a shootout, where the men emerged victorious.  A big shoutout to rookie goalkeeper Denver Mills, whose incredible performance in the semi-final penalty shootout saw the men into the final. The men lost to George Brown in the finals, resulting in a 3-1 scoreline.


Players to Watch

Our Condor athletes have been working hard all year, and these athletes are standing out on the court:

Julia Zonneveld, Women's Basketball – Julia showcased her defensive skills against Fanshawe, contributing to the team's energy and engagement.

Mark Pohner, Men's Basketball – Mark came off the bench and scored 11 points against Redeemer, followed up by 16 points against Fanshawe.   

Kylie Namtzu, Women's Volleyball – Kylie had an impressive .500 kill percentage against Mohawk, where she had 6 points.

Walker Kalin, Men's Volleyball – Walker had 13 points and an impressive nine digs against Mohawk. He continued his performance against St. Clair with 15 points and 12 kills.

Megan Voutour, Women's Indoor Soccer – Megan scored four goals in the invitational tournament. She stood out with impressive ball control, strong tackles, and consistently looking to set up teammates.

Abby White, Women’s Indoor Soccer – Rookie Abby White had a fantastic showing at the invitational tournament. She is an exciting addition to the team!

Megan Heyes, Women’s Indoor Soccer – Captain Megan Heyes demonstrated exceptional leadership, keeping her team organized and disciplined throughout the competition.

Carson Davison, Men’s Indoor Soccer – Carson’s efforts on the pitch were a massive contributor to the Condor’s incredible defensive record, helping the Men keep four clean sheets in five games. His presence on the field made him a nightmare for opposing attackers.

Luca Romano, Men’s Indoor Soccer – Luca was a vital part of the Condors' attacking play, contributing to both the buildup and finishing of chances. He stepped up in big moments with goals and assists to help the Men reach yet another final.
