2023 Men's Basketball Season Preview
A New Chapter Begins
As the men’s basketball team get ready for the upcoming season, they look back on the highs and lows of the previous season. Last season brought out the presence of two All Stars, an MVP and a scoring leader representing our Condors with pride. However, last season ended with a quarter final defeat in the playoffs. This experience has served as a valuable stepping stone for the team and their journey. Significant changes have taken place, involving a transitional period from Assistant, to Interim, to Head Coach for Avery Sutton.
The Roster
This season, returning players are notably forming the backbone of the team. Ozay Davis, Rylan Ninaber and Hadi El-Miari are back in action. Ozay Davis, as captain, brings leadership both off and on the court. Rylan Ninaber, also captain, adds valuable experience and skills to the squad. Hadi El-Miari has taken initiative to be a leader during the off-season, which has displayed growth in his role.
This season our fans will notice a redefinition of roles. Players are expected to take on more significant responsibilities, alongside the return of 10-11 veterans, the team will benefit from experience and connection, promising a high performing squad.
In addition to our returning players, the team is accompanied by arrival of promising recruits. Mark Pohner, a first-year player, is well known for his elite shooting and impeccable guard skills. Adam Eichholz demonstrates composure and a notable ease in navigating the highly competitive environment around him, all while remaining dedicated to developing his skillset further. Look for these two to make an immediate impact this season!
Season Goals
The squad has set clear objectives for the upcoming season. There is a strong emphasis on building a professional culture. Being student athletes remains a main priority, but implementing professionalism and commitment is crucial as well. Another goal the team has set, is to return to playoffs, with an even stronger performance. The team collectively agrees that last year’s quarter final appearance serves as motivation to go further this season.
Overall, the Condors are aiming to become a high-powered force as the season begins, with further growth prospects on the lookout.
Player Insights
Ozay Davis supplies us with valuable insight into the upcoming season and the team’s journey. Reflecting on the preseason, he highlights the great effort the team has made.
“Preseason went well” says Davis. “Our team experienced significant growth throughout all the preseason games. We approached each game with a competitive mindset, using it as an opportunity to strengthen both our team dynamic and our individual skills.”
When discussing the upcoming season, Ozay’s excitement is visible when speaking on the team’s potential and the camaraderie that supports it.
“I am very excited for this upcoming season. We have a lot of potential and a great group of boys to back it up.”
When asked about the team’s goals for the season, Ozay outlined the strong commitment to success. “Some goals for this upcoming season are winning a championship, always playing with 100% effort when on the floor and lastly being able to deal with adversity. The season will come with ups and downs. As a team it is very important to be able to overcome the downs and learn from them and to not let them affect us on the way back up".
