2024 Rugby 7s Season Preview

The 2024-2025 OCAA women’s Rugby7s season is approaching. The Conestoga Condors are eager to make their mark on the field. With another chance to fight for the OCAA championship. “I am looking forward to seeing how well all these players are going to work together, I think there is a lot of potential this year for the team to blend very well,” said Head Coach Andrew Petricca.

This year, the rugby 7s team is filled with hope and excitement. Last year was a challenging period as the team was recovering from the effects of COVID, which made it difficult for them to gain momentum. Despite the struggles, the dedication of the players who joined during that time was crucial to keeping the team together. 

This year, the team is already showing much more potential, thanks to the involvement of some exceptional athletes. With a stronger and more promising lineup, the team is set for a much better season. Captain Courtney Gowland, last year’s MVP, showed remarkable leadership during the 2023-2024 season. Despite not achieving their desired results, the team’s effort set the stage for new opportunities. This season, Courtney will guide both familiar faces and promising newcomers. Jillian Vickery, a vital contributor from previous seasons, returns to offer her expertise and game knowledge. 

Coach Andrew Petricca, renowned for his strategic insight, aims to finish in the top four this season with a focus on continuous improvement. He is looking forward to seeing how the new recruits, including Abbey Anderson, will integrate with the team. Abbey, a former player for the University of Guelph women’s rugby team, has already demonstrated her strong work ethic, effective communication, and fresh ideas. Newcomers Sophia Both and Anitta Ben have also shown their value through their collaborative and vocal presence on the field, crucial for successful playmaking. With these new additions and the rest of the team, the Condors have the potential to excel and deliver impressive performances.
