OCAA Badminton Championships Recap

Condors Soar at the OCAA Badminton Championships

The Conestoga Condors proudly hosted the 2025 OCAA Badminton Championships on February 14th and 15th at the Student Recreation Centre, welcoming the province’s best collegiate badminton athletes for two days of high-level competition. With a season of growth behind them and the support of the home crowd, the Condors gave strong performances across multiple categories.

Condors Results

The Condors had a strong presence throughout the tournament, with several athletes making deep runs in their respective brackets:

  • Women’s Singles: In women’s singles, the Condors were represented by Mandy Ni and Hetviben Patel. Hetviben won two matches in the preliminary round, including a gritty comeback win over a competitor from Cambrian (19-21, 21-19, 21-18). Ultimately though, Hetviben finished 4th in the pool and did not advance to the playoff rounds. Mandy Ni delivered an impressive performance, finishing the preliminary round with a 4-1 record, advancing to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals match Ni controlled the pace of play and defeated the competitor from Cambrian (21-16, 22-20). Moving into the semifinals match, Mandy faced off against Boreal’s Kristen Vane in what would be the match of the tournament. After conceding the first game 15-21, Ni battled back to dominate the second set 21-10, forcing a third and deciding game. In the third game, both players had match point opportunities, but Ni was able to take advantage and won the deciding game 24-22. In the finals, Mandy met up with Ellen Shen from George Brown College. It was an exciting back and forth match that finished with Ni securing a silver medal after falling 15-21, 21-19, 21-17 to Shen. Ni’s second-place finish earns her a spot at the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Badminton National Championships in Edmonton later this month.

  • Men’s Singles: In men’s singles play, the Condors were represented by Nolan Bridge and Max Barnes. In the preliminary rounds Nolan finished second in his pool with a 2-1 record while Max finished his pool ranked 1st with a 3-0 record. This set up a Condor vs Condor matchup in the quarterfinals with the two men facing off against each other. It was a tight match with both players going on scoring runs but, in the end, Max pulled ahead to win 21-15, 21-18. After Barnes started the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record, he advanced to the bronze medal match, ultimately finishing 4th after a competitive battle against St. Lawrence’s Maneet Lok Singh Bindra (21-9, 21-11).

  • Women’s Doubles: Yrhicka Lozano & Nandini Sharma finished 4th in their preliminary pool, coming up just short of qualifying for the elimination rounds. The highlight of the tournament for the duo came in a 2 – 0 (21-16, 21-11) win over the competitors from Fanshawe College.

  • Men’s Doubles: Pravin Viswanathan & Lin Andre Jan Vitin battled hard in four preliminary matches but finished 4th in their pool, one spot from making the playoff rounds. Their highlight of the tournament came in a thrilling three game win (21-10, 20-22, 21-18) over the team from Cambrian College.

  • Mixed Doubles: Mariam Muqeem & Ryan Tu won matches over Lambton (21-4, 21-4) and Cambrian (21-7, 21-6) in the preliminary round, qualifying them for the playoff rounds. In the quarterfinal round the team competed against a team from George Brown College, after two tight games the Condors were eliminated by scores of 21-14, 21-16. Although their day ended sooner than they would have liked, it was a great showing from Mariam and Ryan!
