Intramural Basketball Rules

FIBA’s 5-on-5 rules will be in effect with the following changes:

Part C: The Teams

  1. All players must be full-time Doon/Cambridge campus students with valid student cards. Participants must be on a team roster and only play for one team. If a player plays on an additional team the team will be awarded a default. All participants require student cards to gain entry into the gym.

  2. A team must have a minimum number of 5 total players. If at any time a team has less than 5 players for a game (eg. Due to penalties. Ejection, etc.), the game is a forfeit. If any team member is in doubt of their eligibility, they should speak with their team captain, the Convener or the Recreation and Fitness Coordinator.

  3. If a team cannot attend a game, they must give at least a minimum of three days notice to the league convener.

Part D: Equipment

  1. All Players must wear indoor, gym shoes and proper gym attire. No jeans or pants/shorts with zippers. No street shoes, boots, dress shoes, bare feet, sandals or anything similar.

  2. No jewelry (unless properly taped down), non-elastic headbands, or hard support braces are allowed during game time. Captains will be warned at the beginning of the game to have all their players remove such items. During the game, players found to still be wearing such items will be asked to leave play until it is removed. A constant violation during the game will result in a technical foul.

  3. A game ball will be provided for gameplay only (not for practicing). Practice equipment can be rented from the Front Desk.

Part E: General Game Rules

  1. Time: There are two halves each 20 minutes in length running time. If within 10 points, the last 2 minutes of the game (2nd half) will stop time. The last 60 seconds of each half will be stopped time regardless of the score.

  2. Substitutions: Free substitutions will be allowed during play from the side of the center court line as long as neither team uses it to their advantage. If one or both teams are abusing this, the referee reserves the right to refuse further substitutions.

  3. Overtime will consist of one, 2 minute stop time period. If the game is still tied after overtime, the tie will stand.

  4. Half-time will consist of a 5-minute break unless the game is behind schedule, in which case the convener/referees can shorten the length of half-time. Half-time must be at least 2 minutes with 1 minute given prior to an overtime period.

  5. Each team will have one 30 second timeout per half. These timeouts are not cumulative (i.e. if a team does not use their timeout in the first half, they are not entitled to two timeouts in the second half). Teams will also receive one timeout per overtime period.

Part F: Fouls

  1. After 5 fouls, the offending player will be ejected from the game. Depending on the nature of the fouls will determine if the offending player will have additional consequences.

  1. If a player is consistently fouling in an aggressive manner, the Referees/Convener have the authority to ask the player to leave the gym.

  2. Any technical foul will result in the ejection of the offending player. A technical foul to the bench will count as a foul towards the captain, though they will not be ejected. Technical fouls result in one shot plus possession.

  3. Any Player receiving a fighting penalty will be suspended for a minimum of 3 games.

  1. Good sportsmanship must be followed. Players showing poor sportsmanship may be asked to leave the gym.

  1. Any player playing under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs WILL be immediately suspended from all intramural sports.

  1. Fighting in any form will result in a default and the offending captain(s) and team(s) will be subject to a suspension.

Part G: Playoffs

  1. All playoff games are single elimination.

  2. Tied: If the score is tied after regulation, a 2 minute overtime will occur. If the game is still tied after completing the overtime period, additional overtime periods will be played until a winner is determined.

Players must play at least 50% of the team's games to be eligible for playoffs
