2023 Cross Country Season Preview

A headline reading "2023 cross country season preview"

Last Season Recap

Last season marked a victorious return for the Condors Cross Country team from the pandemic. The team’s top achievement of the season was Dianne DeBoer’s qualification for the CCAA National Championship. The overall team also had success with an impressive top-10 ranking in the OCAA. This year, the team is gearing up for brand new accomplishments, featuring a blend of experienced athletes and promising recruits.

The 2023 Season

Our men’s team is witnessing a leadership transition this year, Mauricio Ezquer, last season’s top male runner, is now passing the baton to returning athletes, Riley Domaratzki and Caleb Canfield. Furthermore, a significant development this year is the formation of a complete women’s team. Dianne, an impressive on-course leader, now takes the lead of the women’s team, supported by Head Coach David Sharratt and Assistant Coaches Amanda Hutchings (a former Condor runner herself) and Robert Brouilett.

The Condors have a powerful athletic roster this season. Dianne, Riley, and Caleb, given their experience, provide a very solid foundation for the team and they are accompanied by a strong class of new recruits. Among the new runners, Bryce Neary, Nathan Paul, and Josh Barber have stood out, all showing potential to run at the national level.

The top 15 male and female individual runners at the OCAA Championship will secure a spot at the CCAA National Championship on Nov. 10/11, 2023, in Truro, NS, while the top 5 teams will earn qualification for nationals as a team. Dianne will look to build on her impressive 2022 season with a return to the CCAA Championship with the hopes of being joined this year by a larger flock of Condors.

The season will begin with an exciting race at Fanshawe on Saturday, September 30th, marking a critical moment for the Condors as they set out to prove their potential.

Moving forward, the Conestoga Condors are committed to performing their best and battling for the podium at every meet! They are getting familiar with the home OCAA Championship course and eagerly anticipate hosting the OCAA Championships on October 28th at Shade’s Mill Conservation Area in Cambridge. This, amongst many other achievements, represents a significant milestone in the growth of the program and opens doors to hosting more events in the future.
