1984/85 Men's Golf Team

Bio

Coached by Paul Knight, Conestoga's "Fab Four" consisted of Brad Fraser, Steve Stewart, Steve Stumpt, and Dan Wiechers. This awesome quartet climaxed its season with the first O.C.A.A. Golf Championship for Conestoga College. With the tournament site at Cataraqui Golf and Country Club in Kingston, Ontario, the 1984 team held an astounding 26-stroke lead after the first 18 holes of play. Their team score of 309 was just two shots off the O.C.A.A. record of 307. All four team members shot in the mid to high 70s that first day. And despite a nearly sleepless night, not due to nervousness but to fire alarm bells going off during the night in the hotel, the team was never threatened for the final 18 holes on Friday and won the Ontario title by 15 strokes. That Tournament Victory in September 1984 also witnessed the beginning of a streak of 7 consecutive tournament victories through 1985 and into 1986, including a 2nd O.C.A.A. Championship in 1985. This 1984 team therefore not only won Conestoga's first Ontario golf title but also started the 2nd longest winning streak in Ontario College golf history. In addition, two of the members of the 1984 team were involved in all 7 victories.
