Bio

In the fall of 1991, Women's Soccer at Conestoga was a relatively new sport. It was only the third year of its existence. A team that learned to play tight defense and counterattack built up a record of 2 wins, 2 losses, and 4 ties. After beating the Redeemer Royals 4-1 in the playoffs, the team moved on to the OCAA Championships staged in Ottawa. Conestoga emerged victorious from Pool "A" and was pitted against Pool "B" winners, the Fanshawe Falcons. The battle - 90 minutes of scoreless regulation time, 30 minutes of scoreless overtime, and then a penalty shoot-out. After each team had taken their 5 penalty shots, the score was still tied. It was one-on-one; Marlene Ford volunteered to shoot, stepped up, and cooly slotted the ball home. The Falcons shooter hit her shot hard for the corner; Condor goalie Jamie Prentice dove to her right, made the save and won the Championship. Prentice and teammate Caroline Murphy made the Tournament All-Star Team for her exploits. The team competed at the C.C.A.A. Championships at Fanshawe College in London, finishing 5th. Mary Sue Shortreed was named Top Scorer for the C.C.A.A. tournament. Caption, Penny English had an excellent season and was rewarded by being named to the O.C.A.A. and C.C.A.A. All-Team Teams. The team will always be remembered for their hard work on the field and their friendships off the field.
