Rookie Shines as Condors fall in 5 sets

Kitchener, Ontario - It took all of the Mohawk Mountaineers energy to take down the Conestoga Women's Volleyball team Saturday afternoon as the Condors fall 3-2 in a thrilling matchup. The Mountaineers won a quick first set that took just 18 minutes 25-12. The Condors fought back to tie the match up with an exciting second set 25-20. They also took the third set in what turned out to be the most hard-fought set of the game 25-22. Mohawk then turned it up to take the fourth set 25-11, and proceeded to win the fifth shortened set 15-9.

Holly Phipps turned in a fantastic performance for the Condors as she led the team with 18 digs. Her coach gave her much praise after the game.

"She had an opportunity to start today because we were missing a player, and she blew in out of the water. Her passing stats were very good and defended everything, she had a knack for seeing the court." Coach Liu was very happy with the rookie's performance.

We asked him how he felt about the performance considering Mohawk is a tough team near the top of the standings.

"Pretty proud of the way the team played, we struggle with consistency and being competitive when there's something to play for. I was happy we bounced back pretty quick after being beat in the first set. We talked a lot about improvement, we understand there's a threshold we must reach to see results. We're almost there.

He knows his team still has some work to do but knows that experience and training hard will eventually lead to the results they want.
