McGuire set to take over Men's Volleyball

Kitchener, ON - Conestoga College Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the hiring of Kelly McGuire as the new head coach of the Varsity Men's Volleyball program.

Originally from Thunder Bay, McGuire is a former student-athlete at Conestoga, representing both the Volleyball and Badminton varsity teams. He has been an associate coach with the Men's Volleyball team the past two seasons and has been an important part of the team's success in reaching the OCAA provincials in back to back seasons.

He will be replacing former head coach Wayne Harris, who has been at the helm for six seasons. Coach Harris is excited for the Condor's future with Kelly leading the program.

"I'm very excited to see Kelly taking over the men's volleyball program. Like so many other coaches, Kelly is already a much better coach than he ever was a player. He has a clear sense of how you grow a volleyball program over time. He is an excellent recruiter, a fine practice and seasonal planner, and an excellent in match tactician. He relates very well to his student-athletes.

I feel very confident handing him the reins to our program. I expect him to build on the work we have done over the past two years where we established the Condors as a top-five program in the league."

Harris did an outstanding job as the head coach of a team that was searching for an identity six years ago. Only losing to the national champion Fanshawe Falcons at provincials this year, the former coach knows this program has a bright future.

Todd Erskine, Assistant Manager of Athletics and Recreation at Conestoga College, commended Kelly on his dedication to the program.

"Our Conestoga Condors family is very excited to appoint Kelly as our next head coach. We have seen first-hand the time and dedication that Kelly has put into the program the past few seasons, not only on the court but off the court with the student-athletes as well. This is very important to us for our Varsity operations and we know Kelly will continue to strive for excellence for the program.

OCAA player of the year Wesley Lau also had praise for the new Condor's coach.

"I think Wayne has done a great job this year at merging Kelly into a head coach role. He has taken some steps back in order for Kelly to move forward and take over the team. Kelly will definitely add to the program by using his love for the game and statistics. He has already been recruiting, promoting, and leading Conestoga before he was even named the head coach. He frequently talks about future plans for the men's volleyball team and the continuous advancement of varsity at Conestoga. The team is in good hands and I expect only good things to happen with at the helm."

Lau has been an instrumental part of the Condor's volleyball team for the past five years as he reached 1000 career points, a feat only a select few have reached. He is excited for Kelly as he and former coach Harris move on next year.
